Anawakalmekak CDLS Partnership
CDLS is supporting Science is Ceremony/IndigeNations, a summer research program within Anawakalmekak that equips students with a strong foundation in environmental science, traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), laboratory techniques, fieldwork, data analysis, and critical thinking through an Indigenous scientific perspective. CDLS will coordinate housing and workspace at UCLA, enabling students to collaborate on developing climate change solutions that promote the sustainability of natural resources using traditionally informed Indigenous ecological knowledge systems.
Additionally, CDLS has provided fellowships for Anawakalmekak students, parents, and mentors to collaborate with the Gabrielino-Shoshone Nation of Southern California in cultural revitalization and traditional community stewardship at Chief Ya'anna Learning Village and Tuatukar Eco-Cultural Center. CDLS fellows, along with local and regional Indigenous organizations, will work together to advance ecological sustainability, ecosystem restoration, and cultural education in the village.
